Local Directions (onsite map)

If you've come from Durango on US 160 west or Cortez on US 160 east, turn north on State Hwy 184 at the only light in Mancos.  If coming from Dolores, take State Hwy 184 east (left turn at top of hill south of Dolores).  Once on 184, we're between County Roads 39.2 and 38.5 on Hwy 184. -- about 4 miles from the Mancos traffic light or 15 miles from the Dolores turn.

Look for the Sundance Bear sign on the gate on the south side of the road; ignore street numbers.  Also if you are using the internet maps like MapQuest, they are not accurate and often show us farther from Mancos by about 1/2 mile.  See the GPS coordinates lower right of this page.)

Enter the tall pole gate --Follow the drive to the right, to the top of the hill.  We have neighbors on the lower part of the driveway; please go to the TOP of the hill.  Here is a map of the property once you get to the top of the hill.

Here is a google map link -- our driveway is actually about 2/10 mile to the east of this mapped location (just to the left of the 184 sign, south of the highway).  Mancos is just off the picture on the lower right.  If you have GPS, the coordinates are on the lower right of this page.

From Mancos: at the stoplight in Mancos (there's only one), turn north on Highway 184, toward Dolores.  Go 3.9 miles and turn left at western style log pole gate with the Sundance Bear sign.

From Dolores: it's about 15 miles once you're on 184 headed toward Mancos.  Look for the herd on donkeys on the curve  near CR 38.5.   Continue about another half mile and look for the Sundance Bear sign on the right.

Restaurants: if you're arriving about dinner time, dining is available at the Millwood Junction in Mancos, Kennebec Café in Hesperus, Joey’s Steak and Chop House in Dolores, Lottsa Pasta, Main Street Brewery and Nero’s in Cortez – plus many fine restaurants in Durango.  Plenty of restaurant/microbrew combinations too.  We provide directory listings in your room.

Please go slow on our gravel driveway -- kids, dogs, horses, deer, neighbors have right-of-way and there are blind curves.

Flying

Local airports are available in Cortez and Durango, Colorado and Farmington, New Mexico with Durango having the most flights. Airports are 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours drive from the lodge and rental cars are available at all three.  Connections are through Denver or Phoenix.

Four airlines now   serve Durango: Frontier and United through their Denver hub; Delta through Salt Lake and US Airways through Phoenix.  Check out Fly Durango.

Competition has increased and that has helped, but that last leg can be expensive.  If you have more time, we use one of the larger airports and drive (sightseeing on the way).  Gateway airports for the region are Denver (8 hour drive), Albuquerque (5 hour drive), and Phoenix (8 hour drive).

We recommend Albuquerque -- with a visit to Santa Fe or Acoma or Canyon de Cheilly before coming to Colorado.

Driving

Located 30 miles west of Durango, Mancos is about 1 1/2 hours from Telluride, 4-5 hours driving time from Albuquerque and 7-8 from Denver or Phoenix.  We know several different routes and will be happy to share the details.

“Sundance Bear Lodge is a long way from The Isle of Wight, UK, but I think we left a small part of our hearts there.  Surroundings were so beautiful, the welcome so warm, the breakfasts delicious, Mesa Verde wonderful and Chester? - priceless!   (Dawn, Peter, Jo and Jon – UK)"
